If you have ever had to book a private ambulance in a hurry, you know the worst part after the emergency itself: not knowing what it will cost. This guide explains how ambulance charges in Delhi NCR work, what each type of ambulance should cost, and the questions to ask so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

What decides the price
Four things drive almost every ambulance fare:
- Type of ambulance. A basic (BLS) ambulance with oxygen costs far less to run than an ICU ambulance with a ventilator, monitor and paramedic.
- Distance. Most operators charge a base fare that includes the first few kilometres, then a per-km rate.
- Staff. A paramedic is standard in ALS/ICU ambulances; a doctor on board costs extra.
- Waiting time. Waiting at the hospital beyond a free period is usually charged per hour.
Why we don't publish a rate card
Two trips that look the same on paper can cost very differently: a 6 km ride at 3 pm and a 6 km ride through Ring Road traffic at 7 pm, or a stable patient versus one who needs a paramedic and oxygen throughout. A fixed rate card either overcharges the simple trips or surprises you on the complicated ones. Instead, we ask a few questions on the call and give you one fixed quote for your exact trip - and that is what you pay.
BLS, ALS or ICU - don't overpay, don't under-book
The most common mistake is booking the wrong ambulance. A stable patient going for admission rarely needs an ICU ambulance. A patient with chest pain or falling oxygen should not travel in a basic one. How to avoid surprise charges
- Ask for the total, not the base fare. "What will I pay in total for pickup from X to hospital Y?"
- Ask what is included - oxygen, tolls, night charge, waiting.
- Get it on WhatsApp. A written quote avoids arguments later.
- Ask about payment modes - UPI and card are safer than carrying cash in an emergency.
Government ambulance vs private ambulance
Government numbers (102, 108, 112) are free and should be used when available. Private ambulances make sense when you need a specific vehicle type (ICU, ventilator), a specific hospital, a planned transfer or discharge, or when government lines are busy.
