Losing someone far from home is overwhelming. If you need to take a loved one's body from Delhi NCR to your home town, this guide explains the process, the documents usually needed and how the cost is worked out - so you can focus on your family.
The process in brief
- Collect the documents from the hospital (see below).
- Book a mortuary van with freezer box for the journey. For long routes, two drivers travel so the van doesn't stop for rest.
- Agree the fixed fare - including tolls, state taxes and the driver's return.
- Family members travel in the van or follow by car.
If there will be a delay before travel - for example, waiting for family to arrive - a freezer box can be delivered home in the meantime.
Documents usually needed
- Death certificate or the hospital's death summary.
- ID proof of the deceased and of the family member travelling.
- Post-mortem report and police NOC - only in medico-legal cases (accidents, unnatural death). The hospital will tell you if this applies.
- Embalming certificate - sometimes needed for very long journeys or air transport; usually not required by road with a freezer box.

How the cost is worked out
